The La Salsa series is a set of bilingual picture songbooks by Sherri Ross, MA, MT-BC. In each book, characters take a musical journey and learn about musics and instruments from different cultures. There are currently three books in the series, each described below. In the original story, La Salsa, Ignacio Iguana finds that music helps him make friends. In books 2 and 3, the band goes on adventures to find more friends, explore different cultures, and musical genres. All musical sequences, character names, instruments, animals, and settings are indigenous to certain geographical areas where the music is part of the culture. These stories may also be utilized to target both functional skills (social, communication, etc) with music therapy interventions, and music education skills for early childhood/elementary students. Suggested, but not exhaustive, lists of skills are included in the books. The reader may also find musical sequences for each book on the SlowJam Music YouTube channel by searching SlowJam La Salsa (look for the icon of a turtle with a ukulele on its back or a picture of the first book). All story books are bilingual, translated by a bilingual speech/language pathologist.
